The ring sparkled in the dull light that poured through her window. His face held a question, waiting for an answer. Ever since she was a little girl she dreamed of this day. So why was it so hard to find her voice? Why was she hesitating? Truthfully she felt nauseous. Lily Evans stared back at the face not saying a word.
"Say something." he begged.
"What do you want me to say?" she asked smartly.
James Potter rose from his knee and reached out to touch her hand.
"Say yes. I know it's not the ideal time, but we've known each other since we were kids. I love you and you love me. We should be together."
Was it true? Did he truly love her? Or did he love the idea of her. Lily looked down at her hands. She had know this day was sure to come, but how come it didn't feel right? What was holding her back? The face of a man much paler than the one standing in front of her came to mind. His hair much blacker and longer than James'. Her true childhood friend. As excited as she wanted to feel, nothing but loss filled her.
"Im not so sure, James." she said quietly.
"What are you not so sure of? We love each other and everyone expects it." he was growing frustrated.
"What if I don't want it? What about if I don't expect it. hwho cares what others think, they're not me!" her blood was beginning to boil.
He stood back and closed the box that held the ring. Confusion came across his face.
"Who is it then? It better not be someone I know." he said with a growl.
"Its not anyone! Maybe I don't want to get married! You said it yourself that it wasn't exactly the ideal time! There's a war going on James! I could never think about marriage at a time like this. Just give me time." she was hot in the cheeks.
"If it's time you need then I'll wait, but if this is about someone else Lily..." he began to say.
" You'll what? What James? What exactly will you do?" she asked.
He turned away and walked towards the door. Before leaving he turned and faced her.
"Ill wait however long it takes, Lily. Even if that means I wait forever." he closed the door behind him.
She sat back down on her bed and covered her face with her hands. What had she done? She just refused th "James Potter". A scoff escaped her lips. She needed out. An escape. Someone to talk to. But who? Remus? Sirius? None of them could offer the advice she needed to hear. She never really had any girlfriends. Petunia was already married, and had a life of her own. What could her parents say? They were so very blind to what was actually going on around them. They had no idea what exactly was occurring in the wizarding world. And there was no way that she was going to burden them with the knowledge she held.
Before she could even stop and think about what she was doing she had already started writing.
My Dearest Sev,
I know we haven't spoken in a few years and I wouldn't blame you for hating me, but I don't know what to do. I'm so lost these days. I know this may come as a shock, me writing you, but despite everything that has happened between us, you're still my best friend. I can't take holding back all I have on my mind and all I have to say. I need you. Sev, please... Meet me where we first met. I will be waiting ther e for you exactly at sunset. I won't blame you if you don't come.
Love,
Lily
She folded the paper and tucked it inside an envelope. She walked it over to the dusty grey owl perched beside her window.
"Take this Sev will you?O she whispered.
After she opened the window, the bird hoped out onto the window sill and took flight. Lily didn't think he would write back. Nor did she think he would show. But she prayed that he would. He would always when they were still friends. Maybe he would still.
"Say something." he begged.
